[Two different methods of presenting the images in a gallery, the slide show and the lightbox, are shown on the subpages associated with the “Galleries” menu button.

Notice that the entire screen is blackened out except for the image in the lightbox, whereas with the slide show, dark bars appear at the sides of some images where the image size does not match the “slide screen” size. The only way to eliminate the black bars is to crop the images to match the slide show screen size. Such cropping might result in unattractive images, upset some photographers, and is labor-intensive for the website designer.

Also notice the nice handling of the captions in the lightbox — they are in a smaller font than with the slide show, placed at upper right, and don’t obscure as much of the images as in the slide show.]
